Powderhorn Protest

The revolution will not be televised.

There will be no formal invitation. No one is coming to knock on your door personally. This is the moment where you must listen for yourself, look around with your own eyes, and see all the pain, hurt, distrust, anxiety, and fear that our own government has caused.

I know this post is not going to change any staunch cult members today. This is for those people in our lives who are still sitting on the sidelines. The friends and family, who I am sure care that this is happening in our communities, but it is not directly affecting them. The ones who "just want to get back to xyz." We can't, babes. We cannot go back. You've got to move forward with us. Moving towards community, protecting our neighbors, and ensuring safety for all. There has to be better than what we've got going right now, because 𝗧𝗛𝗜𝗦 𝗜𝗦 𝗡𝗢𝗧 𝗡𝗢𝗥𝗠𝗔𝗟.

and the countless others who have lost their lives to this monstrous regime

Do what you can, friends. Speak up. Stand up. Protest. Make a sign. Share donation information. Boycott. Bring food to a neighbor who is too afraid to leave their home. Protests come in all sizes.
This is the time for us to all 𝗗𝗢 𝗦𝗢𝗠𝗘𝗧𝗛𝗜𝗡𝗚!

Michigan Road Trip

Since 2020, we have been talking about taking a road trip to Michigan to see family. This past summer, we finally did it!

…Only two hours into the trip, we ended up at an auto body shop, but hey, memories. We camped in our car for the first time, we visited family across the entire state, and we took the ferry from MI to WI. Mostly, we took our time. We visited breweries, parks + a lot of disc golf.

Below are all film photos we shot during our week-long trip.

Summer Solstice

Still unsure how many years we’ve been invited to this dreamy event, but regardless, we are so grateful to be asked back year after year to Emma + Nick’s Summer Solstice party. Comprised of a community of artists, small business owners, wedding industry folk, and some of the most rad individuals we may ever have the pleasure of knowing, this party never disappoints. Simply put, E+N's annual Summer Solstice gathering is a time for people from all walks of life who enjoy good food, good conversation + taking moments away from the busy stressors of life to appreciate the beauty + nature around them. To take in the longest day of the year with an appreciation + a renewed sense of energy.

Thank you Emma + Nick for continually bringing us together.

My Maine Bitch

After creating this blog and selecting all the images I wanted to feature, I realized…this is really just a blog about pets that just so happened to take place while in Maine.

There are 30+ pictures of dogs, cats, chickens, there’s even one horse photo. I swear we did other things besides take pictures of pets. I think we also went to some breweries, the ocean was somewhere in there, and we may have played some Spikeball. It was the perfect trip out to see our best pals, their new home, and to lose a cat. [don’t worry, two months later he returned. cats are kind of dicks.] Yup, and. I think that’s how I’ll end this… ”cats are kind of dicks.”

Enjoy!

Puerto Rican Christmas

The decision to take this trip, when we took this trip, will forever be one of our best decisions. We planned to take a group vacation with four of our best friends because we knew that shortly they would both start trying to have families and may no longer have the flexibility to travel in this capacity again. Little did we know that only three months after this trip, the world would be quarantined.

We spent both Christmas + ringing in the 2020 New Year with our bests, exploring + drinking rum across one of our favorite places on earth. 2020 started off so well…lol.

Austin Trip

This past summer one Jenny’s high school friends got married in Texas and asked us to shoot the wedding. We, of course, jumped at the opportunity, despite the fact that Marchelle + Dan was trying to potentially kill us Minnesotans with a wedding in Austin, Texas in August. You are either good with the heat or you are not. Jenny is not.

We decided to make a long weekend with our friends who also were going down for the wedding. We had set up an Airbnb that canceled on us at the last minute and sent us into a bit of a panic. Trying to find a new rental spot for 16 people? But we did it and damn if it wasn’t perfect. Because of the last minute booking a mansion (yes, mansion) was available and available for cheap. We spent the next 3 days in a blur of pool time, tacos, drinking + spike ball tournaments. It was bliss.

As a group of extremely competitive humans, the scroll of photos you are about to see is mostly photos of us competing at various tasks: arm wrestling, dancing, spike ball + pool handstands. Enjoy!

Puerto Rico | Taken 2

We weren’t joking when we said previously that we had fallen in love with Puerto Rico. It has been 3 years since we were on our favorite island, but when an opportunity presented itself in March of 2019 and we jumped at it. Cheap airfare and our off season for weddings was a good enough excuse for us book the ticket.

Just the two of us went and it was wonderful. We travel well together, we take things at our own pace, ask for a lot of recommendations from locals, with a basic goal of eating our way across the area. Our second time around we had a better idea of where we wanted to go again and were we hadn’t been that we needed to try. We also were in the midst of working out the details for our next Puerto Rico trip, yes we were planning the next trip, during our current one. We would soon be back in December with a group of our best friends. We’ve already said how much we love Puerto Rico, keep up.

We spent one night near the El Yunque National Forest where we shared a home with a woman who spoke zero English and we speak zero Spanish, but we both understood “no worries.” Gerick took a morning river bath and off we went to the perfect beaches of Culebra for one night of camping and one night at the highest point of the island for a view. We traveled back to the mainland for an additional night of beach camping in Tres Hermanos that may have been a little sketch, but rewarded us with one of the most beautiful sunrises we’ve seen. Sprinkle in two nights in Cabo Rojo right on the water and a final day in the art district of San Juan, Ocean Park and we’ve wrapped our second, but not last trip to Puerto Rico.

Maine Trip 2018

Rain, rain, go away, we’re in Maine with our friends today.

Our latest trip to the East coast may have been extra rainy, but between multiple Mario Party sessions, one massive Chinese takeout order, non stop Post Malone, + walkable seaside scapes this trip will certainly be a memorable one. And if the memories are a little bit fuzzy, at least we took some photos, right?

An Arthur Wedding Weekend

Getting the Arthur family together is always an event of its own. Last July it was an actual event, a wedding to be exact. Gerick’s cousin, Kenda got married in Boston. So what better time to take advantage and plan a whole vacation around the big day.

We flew into Boston for the wedding, danced ( a lot ), was introduced to tasty lithuanian drink, krupnikas, and continued our way up the Cape. We spent the rest of the trip relaxing with family, playing very competitive games of spikeball on the beach, brewery hopping + eating as much seafood as we could get our hands on.

Punta Cana

We should start this blog by just saying, “take us back.” Seven days with some of your best friends, all day beach volleyball, watching two of your friends get married, and top that off with bottomless daiquiris + piña coladas? Yeah, sticking with “take us back.”

Michigan Memorial Trip

Gerick's grandfather, Loren Arthur, passed away on December 16th, 2017. Although we were sad, we were also relieved to know that grandpa wasn't in pain anymore and that his soul could catch up on some well-deserved rest.

In May of this year, we packed our bags, jumped on a plane, crammed into a rental car with my two brothers, Chandler + Lowell, and his wife, Jill, and headed to the middle of the state, to an appropriately named town called Midland.  The brothers competed, trying to recognize old landmarks and structures from our memories of previous vacations. Our first day was spent with my father's side of the family, and Jenny was finally able to meet a number of relatives for the first time. We took a walk to the river and had a fun + challenging time trying to take photos of my extremely adorable and energetic second cousin, Ayla. We ate a huge dinner as is the custom at the Engles, and then we spent the evening laughing + sharing memories on the front porch. It was perfection.

Day two, we left to meet up with my mom's side of the family, the Arthur clan. We played spike-ball, swam in the pool, grilled on the patio, and eventually got the cops called on us because the hotel was undoubtedly run by an android sent here from the future to eliminate all fun. Despite one really nasty hotel manager and a grumpy cashier at Aldi, we had a blast being together. On Cinco de Mayo, we got dressed up, loaded up on tissues, and headed to the memorial service at our grandparents’ hometown church, Homer Methodist. We would hear in the service how Loren fought for our country, helped to install the church steeple, and spent time with his wife, daughters, + grandchildren. We heard powerful words of love + gratitude from his brother, Joy, and a powerful prayer from my brother Lowell. We sang together. We cried together. We lowered his cremated ashes into the earth and laid flowers over his remains. It was a powerful + impactful experience, and when we left the graveyard that afternoon, our hearts were full.

I wanted to take a small amount of time to talk about grandpa and his impact on me. Since I wrote this part last, I can tell you it took me a few tissues and a few hugs from Jenny, but I got through it. Also, as a side note, my grandpa on my father's side, Gene Engle, served in the military as a Marine in Korea, and we are extremely honored to have two grandfathers who served and fought for our country.

My Pa.

There are no words under the sun that will give proper tribute to my grandfather, Loren Arthur. When I think of Pa, I think of what I remember as the coolest grandpa I knew to exist. He could still walk on his hands at the age of 70. He wrestled with us, took us on 4-wheeler rides around the farm, and always had a tool in his hand. I have never met another man who seemed to enjoy hard work as much as he did. I can remember summer vacations at the Midland house or at the Mullet Lake Cabin when Grandma would have to send us grandchildren to coax him into coming to dinner after several unsuccessful attempts herself. He was working when we arrived, working when I woke up in the morning, working as I swam with the cousins, and working on the last day of vacation, standing in the driveway, waving a screwdriver in the air as our minivan slowly drove away and headed back to Minnesota.

Later on in life, I would come to understand that he fought in the Korean War, in the Army's 45th Infantry Division. I understood that he didn't like to talk about it much, and I remember a few times when he would get really quiet or just shake his head when the topic came up. Eventually, through the help of meeting and talking with more Korean War Veterans and visiting the Korean War memorials, I did see grandpa open up a bit more about his time there. In 2015, I asked him what he saw there that had the biggest impact on him during his time in the service, and he told me about a time when he witnessed a truck full of African American soldiers heading to the front lines. He could remember seeing their eyes and seeing how scared they were. He remembers being extremely upset because they were being sent to the front ahead of the white soldiers at a time when the fighting was especially deadly. He knew they should have been fighting together.

Even as I write this, I try to put myself in my grandfather's position, and I fall apart. His bravery and the bravery of so many other men and women can not be understood by those like me who have benefited so greatly from their sacrifice. On this trip to Michigan, we paid respects to Loren Arthur and celebrated a beautiful life well lived. As the trumpet played and my ears echoed with gunfire, I looked around at my mother, her two sisters, my cousins, and the new families that were starting to form, and realized how incredible his legacy truly is. His blood, sweat, and tears are the foundation for my existence, and I aim to live a life that honors his dedication to his family.

Love you, grandpa, rest up.

Christmas in Leadville

Not every family get's to take family pictures at 10,000ft elevation! We jumped at the opportunity to join the rest of the Engle fam in Leadville, CO. It is no wonder Chandler loves it here so much. We soaked up some great sunsets from our AIRBNB hot-tub and enjoyed the ski hills for the snow that they had. My highlight was certainly the elk roast we were treated to courtesy of our Montanans, Lowell + Jill.

Merry Christmas indeed!

That Maine Trip

Sometimes all it takes is a phone call. We looked up flights, booked the cheapest airfare legally possible and started getting excited. It might look like we just hung out with Matt + Sarah's pets the entire time, but we managed to visit many breweries, eat a tank full of seafood, go on a hike in New Hampshire, and learned about Lobsters on a tour around Ogunquit. We also danced like crazy (not pictured).

Seriously, Maine was absolutely incredible and we can't wait for our first return trip!

PS. This blog post is dedicated to Buckbeak the bearded dragon. Sarah, he was a good classroom pet and he will be missed.

An Arthur Reunion

We have family all over the country, which made Chicago a great spot to meet up for a family reunion! We jumped on a flight, got our luggage stuck in a turn-style, get very lost, but eventually met up with the rest of our clan. We visited the Shedd's Aquarium, rode a Ferris Wheel at Navy Pier, and flipped the flippin' bird to Drumpf Tower. We laughed, we cried, we found out how horrible Jimmy is at driving. Haha, jk, but seriously we are so exited to see our family grow and so grateful for the opportunity to share good memories + capture some moments with our family.

We are blessed.

Spring in Minneapolis

People complain all the time about the weather, especially in Minnesota. "It's too hot. It's too cold. There's too much snow." But we wouldn't change where we live for anything. Enjoy what you have and now enjoy our photos!

The Colorado Escape

When your long-haired hippy brother lives at 10,000 ft elevation in a strange town called Leadville, roughly thirty minutes away from Copper Mountain Ski Resort, you should probably make a trip out to visit. Or maybe a couple trips? So that's what we did.

We are still recovering from our wild trip out west. One horrible rental car experience, two days of beautiful bluebird shredding, three nights of as much delicious food + local beer as we could stomach, and four nights of fairly little sleep. It was awesome.

Be sure to check out the video at the bottom from Gerick's first trip (yes, he's spoiled and went twice.)
